61 pirates brought to Mumbai, in court today

The Indian Navy on Wednesday handed over 61 pirates and 13 hostages, rescued last week in one of the biggest anti-piracy operations in Indian waters, to the Yellow Gate police. According to the police, except for one Ethiopian, the rest are all Somalis.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (port zone) Quaiser Khalid said an FIR was registered against the pirates based on the complaint of the captain of Vega 5. The Mozambique-flagged vessel was used as a mother ship.
“We are recording the statements of the pirates and the hostages. As we do not have an official translator we have arranged for a private interpreter with whose help we will register the FIR,” said an officer from the Yellow Gate police station. The pirates will be produced in court on Thursday.
Of the 13 hostages, 12 belong to Mozambique while the other is from Indonesia. “The crew members who are still missing may have been taken to Somalia. Among them are two from Spain, three from Indonesia and 19 from Mozambique,”said the officer. “We have contacted the consulates concerned,”said Khalid.
“They have been booked for attempt to murder, attacking or deterring a public servant from discharging his duty and rioting along with sections 18 and 20 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, the Arms Act, Foreigners Act and Passport Act.” The pirates were carrying large quantity of fire arms including AK-47 rifles and rocket propelled grenades.
